Cover Letters

Cover letters are your introduction to your potential employer. They highlight your best qualities as an employee and provide the reader with some information about why you want the job. A cover letter and resume have a significant impact on your prospective employer’s first impression of you, and a good first impression can make the difference between you getting the job and being overlooked for someone else. Below are links to three slightly different cover letter templates.

Finding a Job

Below are some links to websites where you can search for jobs. Keep in mind, these websites do not contain every job listing in your area. It still can do you a lot of good to walk into stores, restaurants, etc. and hand-deliver your resume and/or job application.

iFoster.org – An excellent resource that helps foster youth find employment.

Homeboy Industries – Homeboy Industries serves high-risk, formerly gang-involved men and women with a continuum of free services and programs, and operates several social enterprises that serve as job-training sites.

Indeed.com – Job search.

Snagajob.com – Another job search/job preparation website.

Filling Out an Application

Many jobs (especially entry-level jobs) will have you fill out an application and won’t accept a resume. Having a practice application already filled out can make it easier for you to complete the company’s application accurately. It can be difficult to remember all of the dates, addresses, and phone numbers that the application asks for, so keep that information written down somewhere where you can access it easily when the time comes.

We have created a sample application for you to fill out. Note that every company will have a slightly different application. It is important to fill out these applications completely and honestly. Lying on an application can cause you trouble later on down the road if and when the truth is discovered.
