With profound sadness, we share the passing of Brother John Crowe, a cherished member of the Brothers of Holy Cross, who peacefully departed this life on January 31, 2025 while surrounded by his brothers in faith at his home in Austin, Texas. His unwavering dedication, kindness, and service have touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Background
Brother John Thomas Crowe was born on 12/9/34 to Edward and Bernice Crowe in Detroit, Michigan. He was the last surviving sibling of seven children. His parents were both schoolteachers, with his father founding the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in Detroit.
Taught by the Basilian Fathers, Brother John graduated Catholic Central High School in Detroit. He moved to California in 1954. In 1955 he received is Associate of Arts degree from Santa Monica City College. Before entering the Brothers of Holy Cross in 1958, he attended Cal State Los Angeles, majoring in Police Science. Brother John’s education continued at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas where he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1960. In 1966, he received his Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California.
Brother John taught school in Texas, Indiana, and Louisiana. His career continued with work in the East Los Angeles area doing gang work and as a parole intern at the California Youth Authority.
During his tenure at Rancho San Antonio, Brother John was a counselor, social worker, program director, Assistant Director and finally, Executive Director, beginning in 1970. He remained director until 2015, when he assumed the role as CFO until his retirement in 2024. Brother John remained involved as an active Board of Director until his death.
When Brother wasn’t working, which was rare, he enjoyed cooking, camping, and fresh water fishing. He was a member of numerous organizations over the years including The National Association of Social Workers, The Academy of Accredited Social Workers, National Council on Crime and Delinquency, The Association of Children’s Institution Administrators, California Association of Children’s Residential Centers, and many others.
Brother John’s legacy includes hundreds of graduates of Rancho San Antonio. He touched the lives of countless youth and staff members, guiding and inspiring them on their respective paths. To his colleagues he was known as disciplined and tireless, an advocate for young people and a champion of redemption. Brother John Crowe touched the lives of everyone he met.
Memorial Service
Brother John will be laid to rest at The Brothers of Holy Cross Assumption Cemetery in Austin, Texas, where he will be buried near his brother, Vince Crowe.
A Catholic service and celebration of life will take place at Rancho San Antonio, providing an opportunity for friends, family, and the community to gather in remembrance and gratitude for Brother John’s extraordinary life.
